Beautifully Broken is what I came up with as my final project prototype.
The idea of turning broken things into something beautiful came to me while walking
through the streets of New York. On almost every corner there are piles of belongings
that were once beautiful. Now, they sit in the streets, dirty and alone.
I took a page from a chapter of a book entitled "Persistance" and ripped it up
to represent the broken. I then twisted flimsy wire that when bent together,
create a strong, upright tree trunk. The tree has eighteen branches which, in Judaism, symbolizes
life. The Hebrew word for life is "חי" which has the numerical value of eighteen.
There are a lot of connections here between strength, persistence, and life.
I imagine this piece as a large installation and maybe going beyond simply ripped
pages from a book. Perhaps it could be an interactive experience where
the viewers bring their broken and ripped clothing to create the leaves of the tree.
